A Radio Host Lashes Out After A Controversial Tweet
The Phillies and Giants injected some excitement into the dog days of MLB action on Friday night by brawling after a hit by pitch. And then, Bay Area radio host Tony Bruno injected some more excitement with a tweet referring to the Giants (who hit the batter that started the fight) as "gutless #!@%*#," and pitcher Ramon Ramirez as an "illegal alien." Needless to say, this wasn't too well-received, although Bruno deleted the tweet almost immediately.
And then, the fact that the tweet was so ill-received was itself ill-received by Bruno (keeping up here?). Over the weekend, Bruno responded to the controversy with a Facebook posting, and it's clear that while he's not thrilled with himself for sending the tweet in the first place, he's even less enthused by the backlash:
Saddened to see the vulture mentality and bad knowledge by the many who have joined the sheep on facebook, twitter and blogs who did not hear my radio show yet jump to conclusions about me without knowing a single thing about me or my 40 year career.
Many have whipped themselves into a frenzy of hate with vile, profane and even threats of violence in their "copy and paste" world of instant justice.
The fact that 2 or 3 people who want to destroy my life are fanning the flames of true hate by spreading this all over the world wide web just disappoints me as someone who prides himself on being a man who embraces all races, religions and opinions.
Not everyone bought this response, with Big League Stew's Kevin Kaduk calling it "laughable" and adding that quickly deleting the post didn't matter. While deleting the post was the most Bruno could have done (and as he points out, at least he didn't use the "hacked" excuse), it's true that it doesn't erase it...and that Bruno's doing himself no favors by lashing out at anyone else. We don't doubt that he's received some "feedback" that's gone beyond the pale, but it wasn't unprovoked. In this case, it's probably best for Bruno to accept that although maybe some people crossed the line, he did, too, and just move on.
