What Happened Last Night: The Clippers Conquered The Pacific, Good Pitchers Were Bad

  • Eric Goldschein

There were a ton of NBA and MLB games last night. And while there is much to say about the way the Knicks handled the Thunder without Kenyon Martin, or how the Mets continue to surprise while the Yankees avoided the broom in Detroit, there’s only so much time, people. On to the important stuff, namely division winners, poor outings and yet another big win for the Louisville Cardinals program, this time for the women:

The Clippers won their first division title ever.

It wasn’t even close — the game or the division race. Led by 24 points and 12 assists from Chris Paul, the Clips put away the Lakers easily, winning 109-95. That means the Clippers didn’t lose a game to their older, more obnoxious brother all season — a first for the franchise — and wrapped up the Pacific division with the Warriors trailing them by seven games. Of course, this might not mean anything if the Grizzlies end up with a better record and thus gain homecourt advantage in the first round anyway, but it’s a nice milestone for a team that is been more or less awful for its entire existence. Kobe, meanwhile, scored 25 points on 6-19 from the field, and played all but one minute of the game. Not great.

A bunch of MLB aces got roughed up.

Here’s the list:

R.A. Dickey (TOR) — 8 runs in 4.2 innings.
Matt Cain (SFO) — 9 runs in 3.2 innings (in fact, it happened all in one inning).
Cole Hamels (PHI) — 8 runs in 5.2 innings.
David Price (TAM) — 8 runs in 5 innings.

Plus, Justin Verlander was outdueled by C.C. Sabathia, and while Yu Darvish pitched well, he had to leave his game against the Angels with a blister on his finger. Overall, a day to forget for professional baseball pitchers.

Don’t forget about the ladies.

Skyler Diggins and Notre Dame got handled by Geno Auriemma’s Lady Huskies in the second semifinal game, which means UConn will meet Louisville in the national title on Tuesday. It must be fun to live in Kentucky nowadays.
