What Happened Last Night: Jeter Goes Down, NCAA Upsets, And A Brooklyn Debut
So much action last night that you missed because you were busy going out and seeing friends and living life. Luckily, I don't do any of that. I'm a recluse for you, dear readers. I stay home and recap big stories so you can live the life I'll never have. Enjoy the fruits of my labor and read about what happened Saturday night in the sports world.
Yankees lose Game 1, Jeter
Raul Ibanez's heroics weren't enough last night, as the New York Yankees lost Game 1 of the ALCS to the Detroit TIgers 6-4 in 12 innings. Not only that, Derek Jeter fractured his ankle and is done for the year. Hey, maybe this means A-Rod will play shortstop. That's kind of exciting, no?
No. 9 LSU upsets No. 3 South Carolina
LSU's Jeremy Hill's 50-yard touchdown run to put his team up 23-14 proved to be the difference as LSU upset South Carolina 23-21. The Gamecocks added a late touchdown, but it was too little, too late. Also, South Carolina return man Ace Sanders didn't give us any cool GIFs, so they also failed on that front.
Unranked Texas Tech crushes No. 5 West Virginia 49-14
And they did it while losing the turnover (2 to 0) and time of possession (29:42 to 30:18) battles. Credit goes to Tech quarterback Seth Doege, who had a Geno Smith-esque game (32-42 passing, 499 yards, 6 touchdowns, only 1 interception). Unless he rebounds with a couple of huge game, this upset probably kills Smith's Heisman bid.
Brooklyn Nets make their debut, down 76ers in overtime
An important moment in Nets history as the team made their Brooklyn debut last night against the Philadelphia 76ers in preseason action, beating them 108-105 in overtime. I'd have a picture or official highlights or something for you, but they don't exist. Not on ESPN.com, not on NBA.com. Nowhere. Great. We'll have to settle for cell phone video of the first basket in Brooklyn Nets history: a dunk by Kris Humphries.
