Where to Draft 2015 Cy Young Winners In 2016 Fantasy Baseball Mock Drafts?
Major League Baseball announced that Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta and Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel were named the National League and American League Cy Young Award winners on Wednesday.
Fantasy owners immediately wondered where those starting pitchers might get picked up in 2016 Fantasy Baseball mock drafts.

So I thought I’d save you the trouble and figure it out for myself? Or at least, I’ll figure it out with a handful of helpers from other sites.
Jake Arrieta, SP, Chicago Cubs
Arrieta had a stellar season, leading the National League in wins with a 22-6 record, but it was his insane second half that really locked him into the hearts of his Fantasy owners. He allowed just nine earned runs in 107 1/3 innings pitched when he won 16 of 17 decisions after the All-Star break last season.
I’m currently involved in a 2016 Fantasy Baseball mock draft with a dozen Fantasy writers over at Fantasy411.MLBlogs.com. They run this slow draft every fall, just after the postseason ends, and each pick comes with analysis, as the writers make their selections.
Some of the writers include Jeff Erickson and Derek Van Riper of RotoWire.com, Todd Zola of ESPN.com, Nando Di Fino of FNTSY Network and Tim Heaney of USA Today.
Arrieta, for instance, was taken with the 10th pick of the third round, by MLB’s Fred Zinkie – the 2015 Mixed League Tout Wars winner.
” I know most of us don’t like to draft pitchers in the early rounds, but it’s hard to believe that Arrieta will be anything less than terrific next season. Now that we have moved past the top 20 hitters, I think it is time for the aces.” – Zinkie, MLB.com
The Cubs ace was drafted third among starting pitchers, with Kershaw going with the sixth overall pick, and Max Scherzer getting picked up with the first pick of Round 3.
ESPN’s Tristan Cockcroft has Arrieta ranked 18th overall, and second among all pitchers, just behind Clayton Kershaw.
Dallas Keuchel, SP, Houston Astros
Keuchel destroyed American League hitters this past summer, and he went 15-0 at home, becoming the first ever pitcher to do so. He’s the first Astros pitcher to win the Cy Young Award since Roger Clemens in 2004, and he’s the first to do it in the American League.
So where is he going to be drafted in 2016 Fantasy Baseball mock drafts?
Well, this group of Fantasy writers is notorious for waiting on starting pitchers (and relievers, for that matter), so Keuchel has yet to get drafted. We’re in the middle of Round 6, and there have been 13 starting pitchers drafted so far, with three relievers getting picked up late in Round 5 and early in Round 6.
Cockcroft has Keuchel ranked 50th overall, but he also has him ranked as the 13th-best Fantasy pitcher entering next season.
All signs point to Keuchel getting drafted in the second half of Round 6 or sometime in Round 7, as an SP2 in most Fantasy leagues.
For both the Cubs and Astros, neither team looks like they’re going to take a step back in 2016, so Arrieta and Keuchel have plenty of reasons to duplicate what they did in 2015.
