Are You Ready For Just How Bad Tonight's 76ers-Pacers Game Will Be?
It's the second night of the NBA season, and there's a nice big slate of games with plenty of good matchups to enjoy (we've got our collective eye on Wizards-Heat, Bulls-Knicks and Thunder-Trailblazers). There's also 76ers-Pacers, which theoretically will be an NBA game, but in reality should be something more akin to a train wreck.
Coming into the year, everyone knew these two teams would be bad. The Sixers are in the midst of one of the most audacious and obvious multi-year tank jobs ever conceived; the Pacers lost Paul George to a brutal leg injury and Lance Stephenson to the Hornets and only the team's shaky frontcourt remains of what was once a title-contender. But thanks to preseason injuries, both of these teams are even worse than we feared on opening night.
The Sixers starting lineup is missing reigning rookie of the year Michael Carter-Williams (shoulder injury), and is bad: Tony Wroten, Chris Johnson, Hollis Thompson, Nerlens Noel and Henry Sims -- otherwise known as "Who?" and "Who?" and "Who?" and "that guy who was injured all of last year" and "Who?"
The Pacers are missing George Hill (left knee contusion), David West (sprained right ankle) and CJ Watson (bruised right foot) and their starting lineup is this:
This lineup is even worse if/when Roy Hibbert drops another one of his patented "zero points, zero rebounds" lines. Bovada has the Pacers as the favorites by seven points, which tells you everything you need to know about how shitty this game is going to be.
Fun fact: The Sixers and Pacers were last and second-to-last, respectively, in Grantland's NBA League Pass Rankings. But they didn't take into account what would happen when these two teams play each other -- their combined crappiness actually elevates them into must-watch status, if only for the laughs.
UPDATE: There's been a change to the Pacers' lineup -- one no-name guy for another:
Coach Vogel says Solomon Hill (@solohill) will be in the starting lineup tonight.
