Atlanta Zoo Names Its Black Mamba After Kobe Bryant
Everything I know about black mambas I learned from the movie Kill Bill 2, with one exception: the Atlanta Zoo has one, and it's naming it after Kobe Bryant.
Bryant said that he didn't want a farewell tour, but apparently he's getting one. The Atlanta Hawks, in association with the Atlanta Zoo, have named their black mamba after Bryant, as the Lakers come to Atlanta tonight for Bryant's final appearance there.
That's the great thing about being 3-15 -- it's easy to identify your final appearances. In the release below, however, the Hawks were careful to say "Kobe Bryant's final regular season game in Atlanta". Aww, that's cute -- the Hawks are saying that he could come back in the post-season. Hilarious.
The Atlanta Hawks will host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, Dec. 4 at Philips Arena (8 p.m.) in Kobe Bryant's final regular season game in Atlanta. To pay tribute to Bryant's memorable career, the Hawks and Zoo Atlanta have announced that the Zoo will name its black mamba snake Kobe. In addition, the Hawks will make a donation to Zoo Atlanta to further honor Bryant. “Kobe Bryant's career accomplishments speak for themselves,” said Hawks and Philips Arena CEO Steve Koonin. “He has set a standard with his incredible work ethic, tremendous will and competitive spirit. We're happy to be partnering with Zoo Atlanta to recognize the impact Kobe has made on the NBA and its popularity worldwide.”
I hate "farewell tours" with a passion -- seeing a multi-millionaire get a rocking chair made of bats is the most egregious waste of time in sports. But in this case the Hawks are actually doing something constructive to help animals, so bravo. My only hope is that Daryl Hannah will be in attendance.
Elle Driver: [reading] " 'The venom of a black mamba can kill a human in four hours if, say, bitten on the ankle or the thumb. However, a bite to the face or torso can bring death from paralysis within 20 minutes.' Now, you should listen to this, 'cause this concerns you. 'The amount of venom that can be delivered from a single bite can be gargantuan.' You know, I've always liked that word... 'gargantuan'... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence."
