Barkley Says Durant Is Trying To Cheat His Way To A Championship
Climbing a mountain is never easy, but there proactive steps you can take to make it easier on yourself. Many consider Kevin Durant's decision to join the already loaded Golden State Warriors something of a shortcut to the top. Charles Barkley -- a man who famously never won an NBA Championship -- thinks Durant is taking a helicopter there. Of course, there's an entire season to play, so it's unfair to judge Durant for a title he still hasn't won (yet), but the point stands that the four-time NBA scoring champion signing with the best team in basketball during his prime is objectively a less admirable route to a ring than, ya know, winning it virtually anywhere else.
As far as Chuck's choice of words, those might've been a bit much. He said Durant was "cheating," which implies the rules were broken (and of course, they weren't).
In response to a question comparing the Boston Celtics "Big Three" of the late 00's, Barkley had this to say Wednesday morning on "Mike & Mike"...
"Those guys were traded. They didn't conspire to get together. That was just a great trade -- a bad trade by Minnesota. That was a trade. That wasn't three guys getting together over the summer on the banana boat trying to dominate the league. That is my problem. Listen, if you get traded, you get traded, but when you get together and say, 'Let's dominate the league and try to cheat your way to a championship.'"
For the record, LeBron James, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade were on that banana boat. Also, there's nothing in the rulebook that says three adult men cannot ride a yellow tube around the ocean for fun. But just like collusion, it's generally frowned upon, which I think is what Barkley was getting at. The question then becomes, do the people on banana boat really give a fuck what you or I or Charles Barkley think?
Let Kevin Durant ride whatever phallic inflatable device he wants, ok?
