The Hype Report: Every Player On The Celtics Is Overrated?
June 1 / Dan Fogarty / SportsGrid
SportsGrid uses a "hype meter" to gauge whether an athlete is currently overhyped or underhyped. The formula compares an athlete's Power Grid ranking to the amount of media mentions that player receives, and gauges how consistent their level of play is with the amount of attention they receive. The Hype Report takes a closer look at the hype meter and who it designates as overhyped, who it says is underhyped, and why.
Everyone On The Celtics
This one is a bit misleading. Since players in the NBA Finals tend to get the spotlight when it comes to media attention, especially when said players play for one of the most storied franchises in sports, the buzz surrounding them can reach a fever pitch. Such is the case with the Boston Celtics.
Rajon Rondo, who many now consider to be the best point guard in the league, is slightly overrated, if only for the fact that his emergence as a superstar seemed so sudden and jarring.
His PVR (which is based on regular season stats) will surely be higher heading into next season, and the buzz will level off. It's worth noting however, that a strong playoff run can lead to unmet expectations the following year (see Hedo Turkoglu). But we fully expect Rajon to deliver.
On the other hand, other players in the Finals are already highly rated according to our PVR rankings: they had consistently great regular seasons that are in line with the amount of attention they're getting.
