Evan Turner On Getting Booed In Philly: ‘Jesus Was Hated Too’
Evan Turner returned to Philadelphia last night as a member of the Boston Celtics. He was booed every time he touched the ball. Brotherly love!
Clearly perturbed and upset by the reaction he got -- it's not like he forced his way out of town; you can't hate a guy for sucking... can you? Oh right, this is Philadelphia, of course you can -- he reacted by comparing himself to Jesus, which we usually file under "Bad Idea." This was no exception. Only Ray Allen can do that.
Here's what he had to say after the game. Context is key, of course, but the Jesus piece is a bit of a non sequitur (emphasis ours, via CSNNE.com):
"I don't worry about it anymore. I don't want to sound super weird, but Jesus was hated too. At the end of the day, I just worry about the stuff that's important. If it makes you happy to boo me, go ahead. I'm still happy. I put all that stuff behind me."
Jesus was hated too, but Jesus didn't under-perform massively as the second overall pick in the 2010 Draft. Did you know he was averaging over 17 points per game before being traded mid-season to the Pacers? Hardly seems worth booing, but Philadelphia has proved time and again that you don't need to deserve to be hated in order to be hated there. You just have to be.
