Gregg Popovich On Relationship With Tim Duncan: “We’re, Like, In Love”
Gregg Popovich, longtime head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, has been the NBA's greatest coach over the last 20 years. You can assign greatness in short stints to other guys, but as far as total legacy and continued success across that time frame, Pop has only one equal in all of sports right now: Bill Belichick.
While the two have been compared in the past for their tendency to employ dry sarcasm when dealing with the media, Popovich has softened in his later years. He's always been much better at finding the humor in things when there is humor to be found, and that's never been more evident than it has been since Tim Duncan retired at the end of last NBA season.
Pop has admitted on multiple occasions that he's felt a little lonely without his former star center, with whom he won five championships. It makes sense. After a horrendous 1996 season during which Popovich took over as head coach, the Spurs drafted Duncan first overall. The rest, as they say, is history.
So with this being his first full season without Duncan, reporters have been keen to ask if they keep in touch, if they miss each other and of course, if he is seeking out any advice from the future first-ballot Hall of Famer. His response to that question on Monday morning was epic Pop, as per usual:
I legitimately smile every time I watch that. Hearing this 67-year-old basketball coach joke that he sends Duncan kissy face emojis is the best, and he has the entire media scrum cracking up. He even cracked himself up. You know his lines are good when even Pop is laughing at Pop's jokes.
Pop + Tim forever. I can't wait for those Hall of Fame speeches.
