Lamar Odom Denies Drug Use At Brothel In Interview With Wendy Williams
Lamar Odom's struggles with substance abuse, addiction and the trappings of fame have been well publicized, especially since everything came to a head two years ago after the former NBA star ended up hospitalized in a coma. The events that precipitated his near-death experience turned out to be a fateful trip to a Nevada brothel, the Love Ranch, where Odom was reported unconscious after an undetermined time spent at the establishment.
Toxicology reports showed that he had cocaine in his system, along with alcohol and a dangerous herbal supplement intended to enhance sexual performance. His now ex-wife Khloe Kardashian, and the rest of her family, spent a lot of time by Odom's side at the hospital during his recovery but he has since lost touch will the entire family - including Khloe.
Known best for his time playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Odom is now using his fame - and infamous struggles - to speak out about addiction and drug abuse, leaning on his own personal experiences as well as losing his best friend to prolonged heroine use. Since recovering from the coma, Odom claims that he has been committed to staying sober, and that was the pretense under which he entered his interview with Wendy Williams on Wednesday.
However, after starting the interview off normally enough -discussing his rise to a new level of fame and access after marrying into the Kardashian family, Odom made some odd and contradictory statements about what led to his collapse into the coma.
WW: When the big thing happened at the bunny ranch, you were there for a few days.
LO: I mean I wasn't there for a day.
WW: You weren't there for a day?
LO: I mean I woke up in a coma, I don't know if I spent more than a day there. I don't think so.
WW: Okay. Where you high, Lamar?
LO: Nah ah. I think that was God, trying to get me to stop doing whatever I was doing. Because I didn't take any drugs that night.
WW: You said there were no drugs in your system. How many women were in the room?
LO: Two. And I didn't have sex.
WW: By the way, the toxicology report showed that you had cocaine in your system. Real talk.
LO: Okay. But I didn't.
It's a bizarre exchange during which Odom repeatedly denies any of the behaviors that are commonplace at a brothel, most especially sex. It's also interesting that he makes such a point to deny his drug use prior to slipping into the coma while he's touring the country trying to be honest about his addiction and abuse.
He continued to make these kinds of denials when Williams pressed him on the details behind his getting kicked off a Delta flight last summer after being extremely intoxicated and becoming sick.
WW: Talk about the plane.
LO: That was bullshit.
WW: Didn't really happen?
LO: Nah uh.
WW: Okay. Do you drink now?
LO: I do. I do.
Williams doesn't push him further than he's willing to go in the conversation, but it's obvious that she's disturbed by his denial of these events that are public knowledge at this point. Everyone is different, and recovery can come in many forms, but the refusal to look at your low points and acknowledge them is not a good sign. Williams also references her own experience with substance abuse in the past, and her question regarding his drinking is important - because there are very few drug addicts on the planet that can drink without it triggering their desire to do drugs.
His denials regarding the ranch and plane incidences were put into perspective even further when just minutes later, Odom made this acknowledgement about his ability to hid his drug use from the Kardashians and the producer of their reality show:
"I was a good drug addict. I was able to hide it long enough," he said. "That's what you do when you're a drug addict. You lie every day."
It's not my place to say whether or not Odom is successfully staying sober right now, or whether he is displaying the behaviors of someone who is fully committed to remaining healthy. I just hope that whatever he's dealing with, he's able to come through it without endangering his life or anyone else's.
