REPORT: Dissension In Knicks Front Office As Phil Jackson Considers Wasting Draft Pick
As we wrote about yesterday, it is extremely difficult to get a clear picture of who will go where in the NBA Draft -- even for insiders like Chad Ford, whose mock drafts change like diapers on a one-year-old. The popular explanation for this uncertainty is that teams play their hands close to the vest leading up to the draft, floating bogus stories about their interest in a player in order to persuade teams drafting behind them to trade up so as to not miss out on the guy. But the real reason, as Ford intimated Wednesday on "The Russillo Show," is that NBA front offices rarely reach a consensus on who the franchise will select.
If the teams don't know who their drafting, how the hell could anyone else?
That being said, ESPN's draftmaster general is hearing rumblings about Phil Jackson's serious interest in Wisconsin seven-footer Frank Kaminsky; interest so serious that he's willing to use the New York Knicks' fourth overall pick to get him. According to Ford, dissenters inside the Knicks' front office are desperately trying to convince Jackson not to do this because the 2015 NCAA Player of the Year will be available with a later pick, meaning the team can trade down to get him and land an established player in the process.
The sheer fact that Phil Jackson would need convincing that Kaminsky isn't worth a top 4 pick should terrify Knicks fans, who've seen their fair share of botched draft picks. But keep in mind that this could very well be a misdirection tactic to get the Phoenix Suns -- who have also expressed interest in Kaminsky -- to offer up Eric Bledsoe and their number 13 pick.
[Takes deep breath]
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Why? Why why why why why??!?!? The worst season in franchise history for Frank fucking Kaminsky?!?! In no conceivable universe is that guy a top four pick given the depth of talent in this draft class! Despite being an exceptional shooter that creates mismatches on offense, he's unquestionably a liability on the defensive end and this team simply does not need any more of those. Worse still, he's redundant. The Knicks already have a shooting forward who doesn't rebound or keep people in front of him. Even if Jackson got a great deal on Kaminsky, he's still not a very good fit for a team that asks its scorers to create their own shots (you can blame Melo's offensive flow-stopping catch-and-hold habit for that).
Just look at Andrea Bargnani's tenure in New York. Lumbering jump shooters see very few open outside looks because the guy who dictates the offense simply doesn't do the drive-and-kick thing. Or pass, generally.
Watch Chad Ford scare the shit out Knicks fans everywhere, below.
