RIP: Darryl Dawkins’ 20 Greatest Dunks
Even though he was known for destroying tens of thousands of dollars worth of basketball equipment, or having what could be the greatest nickname of all time, Darryl Dawkins' legacy in the sport of basketball will always be the jump he made from high school straight to the NBA in 1975. He was the first player to do so. What can we say? When you're 6'11' and 255 pounds at 18 years of age, you've got options.
Dawkins passed away today of unknown causes.
Obviously, we can't boil down his entire 58 years on the planet into one succinct post, so we're not going to try. Let's just say that anyone who gets introduced as hailing from "The Planet Lovetron" by Brent Musburger during the NBA Finals is a particularly epic individual. Factor in the "Chocolate Thunder" nickname he was given by Stevie Wonder (of all people) and his habit of reciting poetry about himself on the court, and you start get the picture that Darryl Dawkins was literally and figuratively much bigger than a professional basketball player.
Here's how that last part went...
Chocolate Thunder Flyin'
Wham Bam Glass Breaker
I Am Jam
Dawkins famously ripped the rim off its moorings twice in a single NBA game as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1979, prompting the NBA to instate a fine for doing so, as it became apparent this giant man was doing it on purpose.
That's like putting a moratorium on beating up polar bears. Who does that?
