Rumor: LaMarcus Aldridge Could Join The Cavaliers If Kevin Love Bolts
If you're the Cleveland Cavaliers, losing Kevin Love this offseason -- just one year after trading Andrew Wiggins for him, without taking him deep into the playoffs after a shoulder injury ended his postseason -- would be a disaster. You just can't spin losing an All-Star caliber stretch-four (whom you gave up the Rookie of the Year to get) any other way. That being said, if the fall-back plan is "replace him with LaMarcus Aldridge," the cloud officially has a silver lining.
According to ESPN's Marc Stein, Aldridge is way more likely to leave Portland than mid-season reports would have you believe, and he's considering both the Mavericks and Spurs in his hometown state of Texas. But Cleveland is also a possibility, if Love leaves (despite his "handshake agreement" to stay put):
Yet sources insist -- at, yes, this early juncture -- that San Antonio sits near or at the top of Aldridge's list ... unless the Cleveland Cavaliers were to lose Kevin Love and then somehow manufacture a way to sign-and-trade for him.
Damn. LeBron James really can't lose, can he? He leaves Cleveland for Miami to join up with two All-Stars. He goes back home to Cleveland and orchestrates a trade for another Big Three. One of those key pieces leaves, he replaces it with a slightly older, slightly more experienced and likely hungrier piece who is probably sick of losing and wants rings. Ah, the perks of being the world's best player.
While Aldridge would inherit the title of "The Man" within a year or two of joining the Spurs or Mavs (something he'll never be able to say in Cleveland), perhaps he's tired of putting the team on his back and is content to be the third-wheel if he means success. This all hinges on Love, of course -- if he leaves for Los Angeles (or any other city), this becomes a possibility. Until then, it's just as we call it up top: rumor.
