Samantha Bee Annihilates Seattle Trolls After Councilwomen Reject NBA Arena
In case you haven't noticed, Samantha Bee is on the scene and bringing unprecedented levels of screw-the-establishment commentary on her new weekly TBS show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Her coverage of some seriously screwy goings-on in America is every bit as fresh, witty and biting as that of former co-worker John Oliver on his Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
The only difference is that she's a woman, and that's a very important distinction. Whether you like it or not, Bee is a trailblazer. And she gives zero shits about your very confusing and abusive relationship with sports.
On Monday night, Bee took aim at the trolls and hate mail directed at the Seattle councilwomen who voted down plans to sell a block of the city's seaport area to hedge fund manager Chis Hansen. Hansen's plan was to build a new NBA arena in the space, which would've been a major step in getting a team to return to the city that is still reeling from the loss of their beloved SuperSonics in 2008.
Unfortunately, building an arena is nowhere near as simple as just voting for it and building it; no matter how many boneheaded sports fans think it is. Year after year we see the toll that publicly financed stadiums take on the taxpayers who just want to keep their favorite teams in town. And year after year fans are fooled into believing that it's just a matter of space and initiative, when in reality it's much more than that.
Councilwomen Lisa Herbold, Debora Juarez, Sally Bagshaw, Lorena Gonzalez, and Kshama Sawant assessed the impact of a new stadium in that specific part of the city and ruled in what they believe to be the best interest of the public, resulting in a 5-4 rejection of the sale. Their list of reasons, none of which were anti-NBA, included saving many existing jobs.
Let's just say that their explanation regarding the economic and sociological repercussions of the stadium were not received well by the angry, sexists on the internet. Shocking, I know.
SEATTLE SEAWARDS. Brilliant. Take note, Seattle-area idiots. That's how you make a worthwhile argument.
Bravo to Bee for mocking the trolls with the sports that they treasure so much. I love sports just about as much as anybody, but that doesn't mean I believe in the way that teams, leagues and developers bleed the taxpayers dry in order to sustain and grow their product. These women - right or wrong - approached the vote in a way that was practical and thoughtful. It was not an anti-sports vote. It was a pro-Seattle waterfront vote.
Just for kicks, let's take a second look at these women and their starting lineup cards to see what else they've done as members of the Seattle city council to earn the hateful, vitriolic garbage spewed their way.
I can almost guarantee that at least one of these women had a hand in bettering the lives or the loved ones of the brain surgeons who wrote such insightful tweets as "Their cycles must have synced up" and "Where is men? Not fair. Big fixed!!!!! Greedy!!!!"
I sincerely wonder whether any of these men have ever even seen a vagina.
In all seriousness, if you are a women who has ever felt under-represented or misrepresented in the world of late night television, Samantha Bee is your savior. Sports are a huge part of my livelihood, but fans using sports as a platform for hatred and sexism is lazy and played out. It's about time they got an ass-kicking like this one.
