Stephen A. Smith Responds To Kevin Durant Accusations On ‘First Take’: ‘Kevin Durant Is Lying’ [UPDATES]
Kevin Durant has a particular brand of disdain for the media. Stephen A. Smith has a particular brand of sensational reporting. The two are not meant to be in the same room together. They are water and vinegar. Neither is in the right. Neither is "the good guy." They're both proprietors of immense pride that makes them say irrational things, and now, thanks to a rumor Stephen A. floated on "First Take" last week, they've finally butted heads in public.
We're loving every second of it.
"In one breath I’m hearing that if Kevin Durant doesn’t stay in Oklahoma City, L.A. is his primary objective and landing spot as opposed to South Beach or even his home of Washington, D.C." Smith said last Monday.
“I don’t talk to Stephen A. Smith at all," Durant told reporters after Thunder practice on Friday. "Nobody in my family, my friends, they don’t talk to Stephen A Smith. So he’s lying...If you ask me a question, I’ll talk about them. But like I said before, I have people who I talk to about everything and I know for a fact they didn’t talk to him, so he’s making up stories."
Smith's ensuing response was exactly what you'd expect. He did not back off his reporting, he did not name his source -- he doubled down and screamed about his credibility.
[TwitLonger] Regarding @KDTrey5 and his negative comments about me, let me say this: At NO time did I ever say I SPOKE to K.D. Or his family. Or his brother, friends, teammates, etc. (although I can assure you all I have on several occasions in the past). I said I HEARD from folks I know -- in a league I've been covering for 19 years -- that if he were to leave OKC as a free agent, these are the cities I was told he was considering. OKC. LA. Miami. DC. NY. I stand by it all. And that is that.
His assertion that I was lying is not only FALSE, but totally uncalled for. Especially from a player who receives nothing but praise not only from me, but from practically every media member you can find. Yet, for some reason, we're all the same folks who don't know *&%$ about the game of basketball. Whose thoughts he could give a &^%$ about. Essentially, individuals he wishes he'd never have to talk to.....that he's being forced to tolerate.....as if someone has done something to him.....OF ALL PEOPLE!
Don't know what has happened to Mr. Durant over the years. But I know this much: We all win with his return, because he is an absolute superstar. The NBA is better with him. We're all at a loss without him.
It just appears that @KDTrey5 needs to learn something about today's world in professional sports:
We don't have to talk TO HIM to talk ABOUT HIM!
Folks like ME will still be here. Watching! Listening! Waiting! Reporting!
Whether he likes it or not. While he's here and long after he's gone.
Time to get use to it.
Monday morning, this thing got real. Really real. Stephen A. Smith went all-in on Kevin Durant and his critics, generally, touting his 20-year career in journalism and insinuating that Jay-Z's Rocnation -- the agency that now represents Durant -- was responsible for the intel that Durant was considering the Los Angeles Lakers when his current contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder runs out at the end of the year.
"I said if OKC, if Kevin decides to leave OKC, I'm hearing that LA is a prime spot that he is considering. Not to say he is not considering DC, Miami, New York, whatever, that is what I heard. I'm not lying. If Kevin Durant -- If I were wrong, Kevin Durant would've signed his deal with OKC. You are being represented by Rocnation. They are not small-timers. They don't want Kevin Durant just because of his name, but because this brother is going to do big things. Are you trying to tell me these large markets are not in play?"
"You do not -- I will say it again -- you do not want to make an enemy out of me."
Smith's scorched Earth tactic included 13 minutes of burns. Watch him hold nothing back, below...
- Stephen A. Smith clarified himself over Twitter Monday afternoon. In my opinion I'm NOT THREATENING @KDTrey5. I'm only stating facts! — Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) October 5, 2015 - On his SiriusXM program, Smith doubled down, blaming the blogosphere for distorting his "you do not want to make an enemy out of me" comment as a threat (because it was).
