Stephen A. Smith Still Dishing Kevin Durant Free Agency Rumors On ‘First Take’
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Float a rumor about Kevin Durant's 2016 free agency plans that may or may not be substantiated but is glaringly obvious so it's hard to be wrong, point and laugh at Stephen A. Smith for repackaging popular wisdom as insider information. After K.D. repudiated Smith's previous claim that he was looking at a move to the Los Angeles Lakers this coming offseason, saying he nor any of his people have ever spoken with Smith, it's hard to believe that S.A.S. is relaying actual information.
It's like saying, "I spoke with God the other day and he said the sun was going to rise tomorrow morning." It's hard to know whether Smith's hocking intuition or legitimate information.
Everyone knows Durant is out of Oklahoma City the second this season ends. Reporting that as if it's cryptic chatter decoded through the enigma machine seems a bit unnecessary. If you're not going to name your sources or give specifics about where he's headed, just say, "It's fairly obvious he's going to leave," and be done with it. Why make it seem like you've got some hot scoop?
Oh wait, because Stephen A. Smith. Duh.
Here's what he said Wednesday morning on "First Take":
"I will tell you this. i'm told -- sorry to ruffle any feathers, i hope this doesn't cause a controversy -- i am told that if kevin durant doesn't win the title this year in oklahoma city he's probably out. that's what i'm told. that's what i'm told. he wants the title bad. if he doesn't win the title in oklahoma city, then it doesn't -- it doesn't look good for them. i don't rule out anything with sam presti. remember, o.k.c. has more money to offer him than anybody else could. if he wants the money, that's the place to stay. but i'm told that this year is very, very pivotal to the future of that franchise because if they don't win the chip, kevin durant will be looking to move on."
Let's hope this thing blows up like last time. That was fun.
