  • Eric Goldschein

chris smithThe seas of the blogosphere boiled with rage when Chris Smith, brother of Knicks guard J.R. Smith, made the Knicks’ roster at the beginning of this season. “This guy sucks,” pretty much everyone, most notably Brandon Jennings, said. And it turns out, everyone was right — Smith was demoted to the D-League back in November, and the Erie Bayhawks cut him today.

There are differing reports as to how Smith’s tenure in Erie ended. Take, for example, Smith’s tweet regarding the release:

And here’s what the reporters say:

Indeed, Smith was only getting 20.8 minutes a game, averaging 8.1 points and 3.3 rebounds. Maybe he would have been more productive with more playing time, but you only get more playing time if you deserve it. So if you’re wondering how a guy who couldn’t manage to get enough run to stay on a D-League team managed to make an NBA-level roster, the answer is simple: Knicks.
