HOT DAMN: Warriors Officially Become Fastest Team To 50 Wins In NBA History
With their 102-92 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, the Golden State Warriors became the fastest team to 50 wins in NBA history. That puts them one game ahead of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team that currently holds the record for the best single-season record of all time at 72-10.
That Michael Jordan-led team took a whopping 56 games to hit 50 wins. Slackers.
In order for the Warriors to beat the 1995-96 Bulls team for the best regular season record of all time, they must win 23 of their next 27 games. That would seem like a daunting task if they weren't currently winning 10 out of every 11 games they play; meaning that they are on pace to go 75-7.
Or maybe 74-8 if they experience a slip up.
Oh and if the past is any indication, the Warriors' record is a virtual guarantee that they will win the NBA title again this season.
Those Steph Curry comparisons to Michael Jordan become less and less crazy as this season moves along, and this is yet another milestone to prove it. I was admittedly one of those 90's kids that until recently, held onto the belief that Curry was merely the basketball version of a solar eclipse; a sudden, blinding and extraordinary light that would return to ordinary form in fast order.
The thought of him becoming the NBA's next all-time great truly never penetrated my thoughts. It seemed like a waste of time.
Now the Warriors sit at 50-5 with a third of the NBA season left to play and Curry is averaging 29.7 points, 6.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. He's hitting 45% of his three-point attempts and is shooting nearly 91% from the free throw line.
HE'S HITTING HALF COURT SHOTS LIKE THEY'RE GOD DAMNED LAYUPS.
So yeah, he's showing no signs of slowing down. And the kicker is that he has the talent to carry a team but he doesn't even have to. Curry has the best supporting cast in the NBA, and by supporting cast I mean that even without him they would be a top four team in the Western Conference. They honestly might win the next seven NBA Championships.
So could it be that someone will finally be able to penetrate the mystique of Jordan? Even this stubborn 29-year-old that still freaks out when they hear the Space Jam theme song is really starting to wonder...
