Whoa: Here’s A Great 25-Minute Interview With Gregg Popovich On Becky Hammon, Gay NBA Players, Spurs Culture And More
Since time began, the non-joke about Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is that he doesn't have time for the media and their stupid questions. He's become a legendary sideline interview subject, for his combination of prickliness and brevity.
But this is only a half-truth. Pop has all the time in the world for you if he likes you -- asking smart questions helps in that regard -- and he clearly likes Mr. T and Ratto of KNBR, sports talk radio in San Francisco. Popovich called in to the show earlier this week and gave a wide-ranging 25-minute interview on everything from Becky Hammon, the Spurs' Summer League coach who is famously female, to accepting gay NBA players, to the culture the Spurs have created during Pop's reign and more. He is -- if you've only heard him in post-game pressers -- delightfully insightful and kind throughout.
Our favorite bit, in regards to being inclusive (for both women coaches and gay players):
So it’s a dual approach I think. Some of it’s gotta be not forced, but matter-of-factly stated, that this is the world: grow up, mature, y’know, widen your horizons. And secondly, be loving enough to continue to educate some of those that maybe never had an opportunity to change their mindset.
