Why Are People Obsessed With Burning Jerseys???
LeBron has a knack for starting trends, especially in the NBA world. He started the "leaving the team that drafted me to go play with my friends and have an easier time winning" trend. He made it okay to create super-teams (in fact he has done it twice now). Unintentionally, LeBron popularized another trend. The infamous burning of the jerseys. Of course, those that burned LeBron's jersey 6 years ago feel especially dumb these days, but that's not here nor there.
The tradition continued on America's birthday when KD chose to leave OKC for the Golden State Warriors. Not only did Thunder fan decide to burn Durant's jersey. They even added their own creative spin.
We give the fans in the second video an A+ for their uniqueness, yet wonder about how much thought really goes into burning a jersey in the first place? Does it actually make any sense? Do you realize that you are actually burning money? Like not the expression, but actually burning money that you spent into ashes. You are burning a player's jersey to prove what point exactly? That you don't like poor Kevin Durant? If he truly cared about your opinion he would have probably stayed in Oklahoma City in the first place.
Yes, it sucks when we see our favorite player leave our favorite team. It hurts and we can be angry, but burning jerseys? Really? Kevin Durant (unlike LeBron) isn't from Oklahoma City, nor did he start his career in Oklahoma City. The only ties he has to the city are the last eight years of his life. People change, situations change. Boo the crap out of KD when he returns to Oklahoma City this year. Boo the crap out of Russell Westbrook when he returns to Oklahoma City next year. Don't waste your own money.
