You’re Probably Not Paying Attention To Karl-Anthony Towns… But You Should
If you're a casual NBA fan, it's fair to assume that you're not paying much attention to Timberwolves rookie Karl-Anthony Towns and perhaps that you think Kristaps Porzingis was the only player from the 2015 Draft to survive a "Hunger Games"-style gauntlet (is a gauntlet in that movie/book? I've never seen/read it). Everyone talks about Kristaps, no one talks about Karl-Anthony. That's a shame and should change.
It's not necessarily your fault: The Wolves are in Minnesota, and by the most basic metric (team record) they are not very good. But while Kristaps grabs the headlines in New York and D'Angelo Russell rides the pine when he should be playing in Los Angeles and Jahlil Okafor has to live with the nightmare of being on the Sixers, Karl-Anthony is balling the fuck out.
Last night he scored a season/career-high of 35 points, the highest total by a rookie this year. He added 11 boards as well, and the Wolves knocked off the very good Raptors. Here are his full highlights:
The official NBA video has some nice angles of his best moves too -- check out that awkward-but-beautiful right-handed lay-up on the left side of the hoop:
While we seem to be undergoing a transitional period in the NBA -- the old guard led by Kobe Bryant is winding down; the current kings led by the King himself are slowly fading; a new generation spearheaded by the meteoric rise of Steph Curry is taking control of the league, bypassing in-betweeners like Anthony Davis -- Karl-Anthony Towns represents yet another generation of stars about to make an impact. He's got next. So start watching.
