(14) Harvard Upsets (3) New Mexico, And Other March Madness Things
Last night wasn't really a matter of watching sports on television, so much as it was a matter of yesterday afternoon. And late morning. And early evening. And evening. Basically there was a lot of college basketball.
(14) Harvard Upset (3) New Mexico.
Charles Barkley had New Mexico in the Final Four - which is to say, don't trust Charles Barkley when making college basketball picks. Or, really, don't trust anyone, because no one has any idea what they're talking about. Because the 68-62 Harvard over New Mexico upset was something practically no one saw coming, mostly because Harvard hadn't won a tournament game in school history and New Mexico was everyone's favorite dark horse. Harvard will face a much more physical Arizona team in the tournament's next round, but for now can enjoy pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament thus far.
(1) Gonzaga barely survived (16) Southern.
This one was a weird game. It was clear from the onset that Gonzaga was the better team - more talented, more physically imposing, more everything. But Southern kept finding ways to score, whether it was timely three-pointers or offensive rebounds or any other scrap-like bucket-making. With 3:56 remaining, the game was tied at 56. But this is where the difference between the teams came to light: down the stretch, Southern settled for poor shots - stepbacks, pull up jumpers, the like. Gonzaga, as it turns out, took most of the same shots. Except Kevin Pangos hit one of those contested threes to put the Zags up four, and eventually sealed the game with free throws.
Syracuse beat Montana by 47 points.
47! This wasn't Syracuse-Vermont, or any other of Jim Boeheim's early round tournament exits. This was a slaughter, through and through, Syracuse just dominating on both ends of the floor and Montana unable to prove that they were even NIT caliber.
If you go to the game recap on ESPN.com, here's what's listed as a "Top Performer" for Montana:
Montana: M. Weisner 3 Pts, 5 Reb, 1 Ast, 1 Stl, 2 Blk
That pretty much says it all.
