Boston College Basketball Has Seen Better Weeks
Tis the season for chestnuts roasting over an open fire.
But if things keep going the way they're going, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts will be roasting over an open fire if things keep going the way they are on the basketball court.
While primarily known for their football exploits, recently returning to a slight resemblance of glory by accepting a trip to the Quick Lane Bowl, the local Boston College Eagles have built themselves a respectable college basketball program as well, having appeared in 18 NCAA Basketball Tournaments, though their last appearance was in 2009 and their last postseason appearance overall came back in the 2011 NIT.
Anyone hoping Santa would drop off college hoops relevancy back to BC would be sorely disappointed after the week they had.
The week did start innocently enough, an 88-70 win over Dartmouth. Perfect time for the Eagles to hop on the Ivy League and send those nerds back where they came from, right?
That 74-66 finale is actually respectable, considering that the Eagles, who, keep in mind, are in the mighty basketball conference that is the ACC, were down by 16 at halftime! To be fair, the Crimson have repped the Ivy League in the NCAA Tournament over four of the past five seasons...but if you're an ACC team, you have to (ah ah) find a way to defeat .500 Ivy League teams, no?
The Eagles were dealt another lump of coal on Friday night, losing to the Hawks. Oh, not the Hawks of, say, St Joseph's, or even an abbreviated team like the Kansas JayHAWKS or the Iowa HAWKeyes.
They lost to the University of Hartford Hawks. Yup, they of the America East, they of the 3-8 record, they have the zero, count em, zero NCAA Tournament appearances.
Needless to say, Twitter did that thing it does when people are down...pile on.
Normally, I'd try to offer some sort of hope for the Eagles but....with ACC competitors Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame, Syracuse and North Carolina still on the schedule....welp, only 2 months until pitchers and catchers report, right new Chris Sale jersey-wearers?
