The fourth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones had their hands full at home against unranked rival Iowa. The Hawkeyes built a 20-point, seemingly insurmountable lead, but the home team took the game over, scoring the last 9 points of the game, culminating with this one-handed floater:
Just a heart-breaker for Iowa, but it was a leg-breaker for the Des Moines Register's Randy Peterson. The Iowa State beat reporter got trampled during the post-game rush onto the court, and received a "significant" break. Ouch.
Apparently this is now a thing in the Big 12, with Kansas State fans injuring Kansas coach Bill Self and running into players and other coaches last February. And two years ago when Iowa State beat Iowa at home, the fans rushed onto the court (sound familiar?). The Big 12 instituted rules to prevent the kind of thing that happened tonight, and they failed mightily. They will either have to bring the hammer down and enforce these new rules, or make new new rules.
Until then, Peterson is spending a painful night in the hospital. Stay strong.
