Know Your NCAA Tourney Mid-Majors: The Wofford Terriers

  • Rick Chandler

During the next couple of days up until tipoff, we’ll be previewing the mid-major entries to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Now: the Wofford Terriers.

It’s true: college basketball fans love a bad boy. The Wofford Terriers are no exception, as the No. 15 seed will be, excuse me, heavy underdogs when they come up against No. 2 Michigan in the second round.

But hope springs eternal, not only in Spartanburg, SC, but at Ohio State, where The OSU Bookstore is selling Wofford apparel this week. Its their annual The Enemy Of My Enemy Is My Friend Sale, and isn’t that what the NCAA Tournament is all about? The Wolverines are currently 16-point favorites to move on, but they were -19 when the teams were selected on Sunday, so what gives with the shift?

Wofford goes to the NCAA Tourney for the third time in five seasons after a 56-53 win over Western Carolina in the Southern Conference Championship Game … sorry Davidson (15-1), you’re out. The Terriers have won 13 of their past 15 games.

The Terriers will be doing it without their only senior, Aerris Smith, who said in an emotional interview following the title game that he won’t be playing in the NCAA Tournament (knee surgery). Hear the interview below. Junior guard Karl Cochran will lead the way: he’s the team’s leading scorer at 15.7 points per game. Let’s meet the Terriers:
