Movie Madness Monday: SportsGrid Casts The 2016 March Madness Movie
Jay Wright, Villanova Head Coach
Played by: George Clooney
The most handsome coach in all of NCAA (Brad Stevens is the NBA now ladies), Clooney is the obvious leading man of this film. With his slick ties, tight suits and witty banter, Jay Wright should be right in Clooney's wheelhouse.
Jay Wright's Wife, Patty
Played by: Maura Tierney
Paired with her former ER costar, Clooney, Tierney makes a natural choice for Patty Wright. After coming up just short for years of the Final Four, her husband and his Nova team finally have made it to the promised land. By Wright's side the entire time has been Patty and you'll see how Nova's constant underperforming and early tournament exists affect Patty, just as much as Jay.
Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Head Coach
Played by: Clint Eastwood
Old? Check. Smug? Check. Desperately wants you to get off his lawn? You're damn right. Boeheim has been the head coach of Syracuse for 40 years and Eastwood is the perfect person to play the Hall of Fame coach. Back in the Final Four despite the early season suspension, with a team that no one thinks should be there, Boeheim may still get the last laugh. Jim Boeheim doesn't give a damn what you think about his recruiting, his zone defense, or his players. Get off his damn court.
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke Head Coach
Played by: Steve Carrell
For some reason, over the last 20 years Coach K hasn't aged. The same color flat top hair and the devilish rat face. If you stick one of those prosthetic noses that Steve Carrell is so fond of on Carrell, hurrah you have Coach K. Carrell has been leaning toward the more dramatic pieces in recent years and getting the opportunity to play Coach K is the role of a life time. We just have to make sure he doesn't tell Dillon Brooks "that's what she said."
Roy Williams, North Carolina Head Coach
Played by: Richard Gere
Roy Williams plays everybody so well. The southern drawl makes you think he is Mr. Nice guy, but really he's lying right to your face. UNC, with all of their academic issues, probably don't belong in this tournament at all. But thanks to the talent that Williams can recruit, they are the favorites to win the whole thing. Richard Gere can play Mr. Nice Scoundrel as well as anybody.
Lon Kruger, Okahoma Head Coach
Played by: Michel Gill
Unassuming and been around the block, Gill nicely fits in as Lon Kruger. Kruger is back in the Final Four for the first time since he took Florida there in 1994. He's an incredibly nice guy and has done a nice job turning teams around. Both Kruger and Gill are unassuming and put their head down and do a good job.
Tom Izzo, Michigan St. Head Coach
Played by: J.T. Walsh
The ability to win every single year without the best recruits is what separates Izzo from everybody else. No matter the team, Tom Izzo's Spartans are always considered one of the favorites to win all of March Madness. In 2016, everything went the wrong way and they were upset in the first round. How will Izzo respond to this heartache? Will he search out Wright to know how to cope? What about the Spartan Nation?
Side note: We acknowledge that the actor J.T. Walsh actually passed away in 1998, but his resemblance to Izzo just could not be ignored. They have hairlines separated at birth.
Thomas Walkup, Stephen F. Austin guard
Played by: Liam Hemsworth
The unlikely star of the tournament, Thomas Walkup has become legendary. He put Stephen F. Austin on his back and may have played his way into the NBA, along with America's hearts. Can Stephen F. Austin wind up in their first Sweet 16 and be the 2016 Cinderella?
Taylor Schippers, Walkup's girlfriend
Played By: Lilly From AT&T Commercials
Walkup's girlfriend, (named changed for poetic license) Tess, doesn't understand what comes with this new found fame and it's such a stretch for them in the spotlight. As Walkup is getting endorsements left and right, girls are also throwing themselves at him. When Tess sees Walkup's phone and the name "Johnny Football" pop up, she knows that Walkup's fame has gone to his head. Will Walkup go back to Tess or stick around with his newest fling.
Kendall Jenner, Walkup's New Hollywood girlfriend
Played By: Kendall Jenner
Walkup's fame has reached levels of unprecedented heights and it has caused a Kardashian to notice. As Walkup is partying in LA with Johnny Manziel, they wind up at the same party as Kendall Jenner, who immediately takes a liking to the boyhood charm of Walkup.
Zach Auguste, Notre Dame forward
Played by: Odell Beckham Jr.
Effortless and nonchalant, Auguste has been the leader of this Notre Dame Fighting Irish team for years. Their ability to come back in the second half has been legendary...as has Auguste's ability to channel not only OBJ's tattoos but also his insane hairdo.
Ben Simmons, LSU forward
Played by: Jaden Smith
For his one year in college, Simmons was going to put LSU back on the map. The presumptive number one overall pick couldn't even get his team to the tournament. How will Simmons react with his draft stock going down and critics questioning his leadership ability? Does it all go to hell when Simmons shows up in Houston, determined to make sure Buddy Hield fails? Will he end up wearing windbreakers to fashion shows?
Buddy Hield, Oklahoma guard
Played by: Michael B. Jordan (Because we had to)
The Superstar. He's been THE best player in college basketball all year, since he decided to spurn the NBA last season. For years, Oklahoma basketball has gone wherever Buddy Hield would take it and now, in his final chance, he has them on the precipice of greatness. As he has risen, Ben Simmons has watched from afar. Will Simmons go through with his plan to take down Hield or will he get cold feet?
Jackie Swann, Buddy's Mom
Played By: Angela Rawna aka Vince's mom from Friday Night Lights (Because again, we had to)
Fiercely loyal to the Oklahoma program, Swann has been there every step of the way for her son. She's had him block out the critics, made sure his school work was done, and checked in nightly to make sure there were no shenanigans off the court. She's as excited as her son is to be this close to a National Championship. Beating Patti Arcidiacono is only a consolation prize to her.
Ryan Arcidiacono, Villanova guard
Played by: Sam Underwood
Jay Wright has said that having a player like Arcidiacono on his team makes it too easy to coach. He knows the system better than anyone and Wright doesn't need to say anything to Arcidiacono. The boy wonder has finally gotten the Wildcats over the hump, but will he be able to play in the Final Four? That's up to his mom.
Patti Arcidiacono, Ryan's Mom
Played By: Becky Ann Baker
She's always been tough on Ryan and it's not going to change just because he's in the Final Four. If he can't finish his papers, walk the dog, and take out the garbage he's not going to play in the Final Four. And that's final even if it means losing to her old high school rival Jackie Swann.
