Tom Izzo Press Conference Devolves Into Tense Debate With Detroit News Reporter
While the rest of the state of Michigan is thankful that Tom Izzo is still head coach of the Spartans, one reporter is salty because of coach Izzo didn't keep him up to date on whether or not he'd be coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Lynn Henning of the Detroit News and Izzo had a tense back-and-forth at Izzo's press conference yesterday. Sean Yuille of SBNation Detroit describes it thusly:
The context of this whole Henning/Izzo thing (it starts at the 13:20 mark of the video at the end of this post) is that Henning had a problem with some comments MSU president Lou Ann K. Simon made about how the media covered this story. Athletic director Mark Hollis reiterated the general theme that the media was careless with how this story was handled, and Henning decided to use Izzo's press conference as a forum to express his displeasure with comments that were, in his view, a "blanket indictment of media."
What happens next is a very tense debate about media, intrusiveness, and exactly what prominent sports figures owe the people that cover them. The fun starts at 13:20.
"Tam, what the heck is goin' an?"
