UNC Nabbed By Probe For Allowing Culture Of Academic Dishonesty
Is anyone surprised that University of North Carolina athletes aren't held to the same academic standards as their peers? Does anyone still care that college sports are an excuse for school to rake in millions of dollars without having to pay their employees?
[NY Post] More than 3,100 students — nearly half of them athletes — enrolled in classes they didn’t have to show up for and received artificially inflated grades in what an investigator called a “shadow curriculum” that lasted nearly two decades at the University of North Carolina.
The report released Wednesday by former high-ranking US Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein found more far-reaching academic fraud than previous investigations by the school and the NCAA.
This summer, former UNC shooting guard Rashad McCants came forth with claims of widespread academic dishonesty within the UNC program, saying that tutors had written papers for him on a number of occasions and that Roy Williams was aware of phony classes. He then claimed that the school was offering him $10 million in compensation "due to the exploitation of me as a player and the lack of education that I received." He could not be contacted by investigator Wainstein, therefore his claims could not be substantiated.
Wainstein did, however, find a culture of negligent oversight within the school, namely the Afro and African American Studies Department, stating that faculty did not know of the so called "paper classes," but they also did not follow up on "red flags" that would've lead them directly to said classes.
