BYU…WTF? Cougars Fake Punt From Own End Zone Fails Miserably
Going into the impenetrable fortress of Albertson's Stadium, home of the blue turf of Boise State football, the BYU Cougars knew that would have to think out of the box if they wanted to defeated the Broncos, who were once again undefeated and nationally ranked headed into last night's show down.
In the early stages of the 2nd quarter, trailing just 14-10, the Cougars didn't just think out of the box....they were out of their goshdarn minds.
Having made up part of an early 14-0 deficit, the Cougars' rally was stifled for the time being by a punt in which the ball was placed at their own 5-yard line. BYU had called a timeout before the play, and all in Boise expected Johnny Linehan to punt it away.
Instead, Boise got a surprise no one saw coming...but the Broncos sniffed it out anyway.
Amazingly, however, the Broncos did not capitalize on the ridiculous turn of events, which originally situated them on the BYU 2. A 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed them back to the 17, and they couldn't gain any further traction as thei drive ended in a missed field goal.
The Broncos would end up winning the game 28-27. In terms of style points of football smarts, however, it's safe to say they blew the Cougars out.
