Daniel The Orangutan Picks Irish To Win Fiesta Bowl
Point spreads, injury reports, scouting... forget all of them. When it comes to the predicting football games, the real money is on what the animals say. And for the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl game, the handlers for Daniel the Orangutan in the Phoenix Zoo think he knows the future (BattleFrog? WTH? How much cooler would that be if it were BattleFront?).

The tradition of using animals to predict the future can be traced back to the Babylonians, who used a form of alectryomancy (Yes, we at SportsGrid are always ready with a good piece of Babylonian trivia). They would splash water on an ox's head, and its reaction would tell the future. For example, if you splashed water on its face and it trampled you, your future wasn't all that good. Great to think we've moved on from those superstitions. Paul the Octopus and the World Cup. The Puppy Bowl. Nick Saban (sorry, I'm a Dolphins fan with a long memory).

Back to Daniel the Orangutan who lives in a city that can see temperatures in excess of 115 degrees, something his native Borneo rarely sees. But primates can see colors, so what the hell, let's see what he thinks about the Fiesta Bowl. He was given his choice of a red Ohio State jersey or a blue Notre Dame one, and he went for the Irish. Does that mean Notre Dame will win? Does that mean he likes blue? Does it mean they even need to play the game?
It most likely means we still have a long way to go in terms of dealing with other species. Until then, go Irish!
