Excessive Celebration Bowl; Helmet Take-Off Might’ve Cost NC Central
Don't you just love when the headlines write themselves? Being the writer of that headline...I sure do.
Bowl mania is so big in college football that now even certain Football Championship Subdivision teams are getting in on the fun, as Grambling State met North Carolina Central in the Celebration Bowl, the first of 42 bowl games that will grace our televisions this holiday season and serve as the perfect distraction in avoiding family during said festive categories.
The game was mostly a defensive struggle, with the two teams trading defensive slugfests in what was a 10-3 Grambling lead.
It did, however, provide offensive excitement in tow major instances. First, GSU's Verlin Hunter made this catch that would make Odell Beckham Jr. blush...
However, with just over two minutes to go in the game, NC Central bit into that lead with what appeared to be a game tying score that sent the Central supporters into hysterics....
Alas, an exciting finish was not to be. Quentin Atkinson, the would-be hero, was penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration, ripping off his helmet in celebration of the score. His celebration in the bowl named after such acts, pushed the extra point back that aforementioned distance. Perhaps it would've happened either way, but it add insult to injury, Grambling had a surprise planned for their opponents when they tried to tie it...
Grambling would take the game by that 10-9 final, evening the annual series between teams from the MEAC and SWAC at one apiece.
