Here’s The Texas Fake Injury/American Sniper Mashup You Need Right Now
On the scale of 1-to-Bill Belichick, how bad is this cheating move by Texas against California on Saturday? Actually, Belichick has never done anything this blatant -- and if Tom Brady had tried this, bloodthirsty mobs would be marching on Foxboro with torches, even though flashlights are totally available.
And of course this has become a meme. We just needed someone to pick out the right American Sniper footage.
So the situation was, Cal with a second-and-1 at the 1-yard-line vs. Texas in the second quarter, with Texas ahead 24-14. Texas linebacker Edwin Freeman had just stepped offsides, and rather than give Cal quarterback Jared Goff a free play, the Longhorns sideline (apparently) ordered Freeman to hit the turf and fake an injury that didn't allow him to walk, stopping the game.
Goff was furious (see below), but the chicanery didn't work -- Texas was docked a time out anyway.
Cal scored on the next play -- the beginning of a 24-0 run initially fueled by Freeman's theatrics. The Bears won, 45-44, to go to 3-0.
It should be noted that Freeman wasn't, technically, faking an injury. He really did injure his shoulder (he'll be out 6-to-8 weeks, the team said), and was trying to get off the field when he was caught offside. But he certainly faked the severity of the injury, and the way it was handled was six kinds of ugly.
