How To Be A Bad Reporter: Ask A Coach For His Autograph (UPDATE)
The Cornhuskers are new to the Big 10, but a longtime Nebraska TV sports director behaved like he was new to journalism when he asked Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz for his autograph at the Big 10 football media day Friday in Chicago.
The SportsJournalists.com forums uncovered the following video of KHAS-TV Hastings, NE sports director Ed Littler hitting up Ferentz for an autograph "for his girlfriend." Warning, the following video will make you cringe.
Now, we don't know what happened before and after the video in question stopped, so I can't criticize Littler for his prioritizing of what to ask Ferentz; for all we know, he asked Ferentz about the Heroes Game and like 20 other rivalry-related questions before and after all that stupid, stupid, stupid autograph business. For all I know, before that clip, he asked a buttload of great questions and got great content out of them.
That said, I doubt it, and I challenge Littler and KHAS to prove us wrong. Otherwise, congratulations KHAS, your sports director is a joke.
We couldn't have put it any better.
Littler responded to Deadspin:
I wasn't getting that autograph for myself, though. It is for this gal who is an Iowa fan that I know. She is pretty sharpe. I hope she likes it.
Of course, I would never get an autograph for myself and had never done anything like that. I hadn't met coach Ferentz before.
I really didn't think anyone would tape record the conversation, but with cameras on every cell phone these days, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Have a great week!
