Iowa Is Still Majorly Butt-Hurt Over Stanford Band’s Rose Bowl Performance
Iowa is still reeling over the Stanford Marching Band's fake cow.
Fresh off of the comical Iowa Caucus, where the state had the full attention of the nation, Iowa seeks to regain some of its lost publicity with a vacuous legislative bill. State Sen. Mark Chelgren, R-Ottumwa, has introduced Senate File 2081, which would prevent the three Iowa universities from "cooperating with Stanford University", unless Stanford apologizes for the marching band's performance at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
As you know, the band mocked Iowa's farming ways with a somewhat scattered series of depictions, among them a farmer formation, a salute to farmer dating, and a nine-foot cow.
The Iowa section of fans at the Rose Bowl lustily booed the halftime performance, ESPN cut away from it, and many Iowa folks tweeted their displeasure. This just served to delight the band, and Stanford fans, who feed on other people's loathing.
"They're not booing -- they're saying 'Mooooo!' "
If Iowa is looking to reclaim its perceived lost dignity, this is not the way to go about it.
As a native Iowan and three-decade Hawkeye fan, this embarrasses me. https://t.co/AE6i8JcYYQ

The real reason this bill is being introduced? Chelgren is seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress in a district that includes the University of Iowa.
Chairman of the Iowa Senate Education Committee, Sen. Herman Quirmbach, D-Ames, to the Des Moines Register:
"Stanford University is one of the premier research universities in the world and for us to cut off contact with Stanford over something that happened on a football field I think sinks to a level that would be unworthy of our fine research institutions," said Quirmbach, who is also an economics professor at Iowa State.
Stanford's band is not an official, university-sanctioned band. It's organized by students, and while a committee has to sign off on its sports routines, it doesn't otherwise oversee it. The non-traditional, irreverent nature of the band tends to scare institutions with more traditional and militaristic marching bands, and Iowa fits into that category.
But I submit that if you can't laugh at a dancing cow, you are much too serious and self-absorbed for this world. And that's what's causing all the problems.
The Stanford band is a joke. That’s just so disrespectful. Essentially spitting on the tradition of everything that is the Rose Bowl.
