GMA’s Interview With The Mother Of “Victim 1” In Jerry Sandusky Case Will Just Leave You More Unsettled
The horrors of the child rape case against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are summarized in the 23-page report of the grand jury who investigated him. Here it is, if you're looking to vomit. It details the suffering of eight alleged victims, one of whom (called "Victim 1") was molested by Sandusky over a period of several years before (thankfully, bravely) coming forward.
Earlier today, Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos conducted an interview with Victim 1's mother (with her identity protected), in which she details the suspicions that led to her son revealing what Sandusky had done, what she felt after hearing such awful things, and what she wants to happen now. As one would expect, not the easiest listen, but also a worthwhile one. Here it is, via Mediaite:
Something that stood out to us: the lack of animosity toward Penn State students, who've encountered a lot of criticism for their response to Paterno's firing. Of course, what she says is true - the students themselves weren't involved in the case, didn't know, etc. It's not to say anyone's opinion on what should or shouldn't happen to Penn State football, or what students should or shouldn't have done, is wrong. Harsh reactions when hearing about something like this are to be expected. It's just interesting, is all.
And what's more, she also said her son is still "cheering for the team" (just after the 3:50 mark), which we didn't expect to hear. The compartmentalization apparently at work there is striking. And it's not like Victim 1 was in total denial about just how horrific what was being done to him was - he blew the whistle. An interesting detail in a case full of details we wish we never would have heard at all.
