Former NFL quarterback and current NFL Network commentator Joe Theismann said that Cam Newton should not be the first pick, let alone taken at all in the first round of Thursday's NFL Draft.
You’re talking about a kid that started one year of football. He’s rushed the ball a lot more than he’s thrown it. And when he did throw at the combine, he was not impressive.
Everybody’s talking about ‘Cam Newton this’ and ‘Cam Newton that.’ If I’m the Carolina Panthers, I do not want this number one pick, guys.
Theismann shared his views on the ESPN Radio affiliate in Washington D.C. He did, however, include Newton among the top five quarterbacks available in the draft. His list besides Newton was Blaine Gabbert, Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallett, and Christian Ponder.
The most unwarranted slight was when Theismann said, "I think the interview that he did with Jon Gruden showed another side of him that wasn’t impressive." We're not sure what side Theismann was talking about. Here's Newton's interview with Gruden.
Here's the audio from the interview via The Daily Caller.
