Lane Kiffin Fired From A Job He Already Quit? Yes, That Just Happened
As you know, Lane Kiffin has been hired as the new head football coach at Florida Atlantic University, while at the same time continuing as the offensive coordinator at Alabama. But now with the College Bowl Championship Game looming, Kiffin has been fired from his Crimson Tide post -- even though he's already quit.
It was supposed to last one more game, but some friction with Alabama's Nick Saban has resulted in Kiffin being canned. And so, college football's Benjamin Button is off to the state of Florida full time -- his last stop until his inevitable next job as a high school coach in southern California. Kiffin has lived his football coaching career in reverse -- the Oakland Raiders to U. of Tennessee to USC to Alabama OC to FAU head coach. (Traffic cop waving arms) "You're going the wrong way!"
So, why did Saban fire you?
"Trying to do both jobs, I thought it would be easier than it was," Kiffin said today on Paul Finebaum's ESPN radio show.
Or, to put it a better way:
“It was like he was trying to ride two horses with one ass.” — @finebaum caller Marvin on Lane Kiffin.

So Kiffin said on Finebaum that it was his idea to leave Alabama -- he felt he couldn't give both jobs the attention they deserved. I still think that Saban made the call, and we have a "let's just say you resigned" scenario here. But it turns out to be a great opportunity for Steve Sarkisian, who will get a running start as offensive coordinator at Alabama effective immediately.
All in all it was a classy exit interview by Kiffin, who ended the segment by saying "Roll Tide." Nice. Let the new era begin.
