Oklahoma Linebacker Austin Box Dies; Cause Unknown
Oklahoma University starting senior linebacker Austin Box, 22, has been confirmed dead. He was found unconscious in his home late Wednesday night and was then airlifted to Mercy Hosptial in Oklahoma City where he was pronounced dead early this afternoon.
The cause of death is unknown at this time.
University president David L. Boren said:
The University family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of student-athlete Austin Box. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.
Athletic director Joe Castiglione added:
Austin Box will be greatly missed by his many friends and teammates in the Athletics Department and all across campus.
Head coach Bob Stoops is currently overseas.
Box graduated earlier this month, but still had a year of eligibility left. He was injured in the first half of the season, but returned to the starting lineup midseason, and ended up playing nine games.
Tragic news, made doubly so considering Alabama lineman Aaron Douglas, 21, also passed away just a few days ago.
