Tyrann Mathieu Was Arrested For Marijuana Possession

  • Jordan Rabinowitz

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: guy stars in college football. Guy fails drug test. Guy gets kicked off team. Guy re-enrolls in school. Guy enters rehab. Guy gets busted for pot possession. Now, pretend you didn’t read the headline and let’s play the guessing game. Whose cautionary tale is this? Got it yet? It’s the Honey Badger, of course!

Tyrann Mathieu, along with former teammates Jordan Jefferson, Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant, were arrested at Mathieu’s Baton Rouge apartment Thursday afternoon. Police received a complaint of “a man forcing his way through the security gate before going to Mathieu’s apartment.” Afterwards, police scoured Mathieu’s apartment after getting his consent, but they didn’t have to go far after the dank scent that apparently seeped through the place. More from Fox Sports:

Inside [police] found…a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana. Kelly said seven of the bags were found inside Bryant’s book bag.

Matheiu, 20, of New Orleans, and Jefferson, 22, of St. Rose, La., were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of simple possession of marijuana. Hatcher, 22, of Delray Beach, Fla., was booked with second-offense simple possession of marijuana and Bryant, 22, of Lawrenceville, Ga., was booked with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Well, it’s safe to say the timing isn’t great for Mathieu, who had been receiving rehab treatment from former NBA player John Lucas. His well-publicized attempt to repair his image by enrolling as a student LSU in hopes of playing out his two more years of eligibility in 2013 and 2014 has certainly hit a snag with this news, and though he is eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft, I can’t think of a team who’d risk bringing Mathieus into the fold.

Jefferson is another story. The quarterback has split time playing for the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL, signing temporarily with the Buccaneers, but is back in Baton Rouge finishing his degree. As for Hatcher and Bryant, they were pretty good defensive players for the Tigers, and apparently, they too love hitting that ganja.

Can we close the book on the Honey Badger? In one sense, yes, we probably could. If stuff like this keeps happening, the book of his professional football playing career will be a short one, if it gets written at all. In a different sense, there’s a book to be written about what exactly what it would be like to smoke pot with Mathieu. I raise the question on the heels of SportsGrid’s most recent podcast, in which we discussed which athlete we’d most like to pass the reefer with. Knowing what we know now about this news, would Tyrann Mathieu make your shortlist? He certainly isn’t subtle about it, so only if you like to live dangerously, he’s probably your guy.
