USC Fires Steve Sarkisian, Names Clay Helton Interim HC
USC has fired Steve Sarkisian as its head football coach today, with offensive coordinator Clay Helton taking over as interim head coach. And hey, this is the second straight season that USC will play the majority of its schedule with an interim HC.
The statement from USC Athletic Director Pat Haden made no mention of alcohol, drinking, or totally hammered at all hours, but check out the second graph here. From USCFootball.com:
"This has all kind of happened very quickly," Haden said. "I was over at the opening basketball thing and got a call that coach Steve Sarkisian wasn’t at practice. So I just learned about this at about 1 o’clock.
"I called Steve, talked to him. It was very clear to me that he is not healthy. I asked him to take an indefinite leave of absence."
If I'm reading this right, Sarkisian didn't show up for practice on Sunday, his boss called him and Sarkisian appeared totally hammered on the phone. And with his history, he was suspended on the spot. And now he's fired.
Sarkisian caused much speculation and nattering of teeth when he showed up in an alleged state of drunkeness during a USC football pep rally speech in August. At the time the shenanigans were written off as an offbeat moment, but now this.
The Los Angeles Times is also reporting that Sarkisian amassed huge liquor bills while the head coach at the University of Washington. NY Daily News:
Over 800 pages of receipts and expense reports from Sarkesian’s time at Washington, which were loaded with alcohol purchases. In June of 2011 he paid a $722.52 bill — which included 83 beers and 12 shots of vodka — at 10:16 a.m. at a Washington golf resort; he rang up a $1,600 tab over two days at a hotel’s poolside bar in 2013; and he ordered 91 shots of tequila during two visits to a restaurant, racking up a $1,023 bill.
