Wisconsin Hoops Player Nigel Hayes Brings the “Pay For Play” Debate To College GameDay
One of the hundreds of great college football traditions that commence every Saturday is the reveal of the many hilarious signs that fans bring to whatever campus the history pregame show College GameDay has chosen to grace with its prescience. Saturday was no exception....
However, with GameDay touching down in Madison, WI for tonight's big matchup between #2 Ohio State and #8 Wisconsin, a star from another one of Wisconsin's elite athletic programs, basketball stud Nigel Hayes, brandished a sign of his own, not for the laughs, but rather to starts...or in this case, restart...a conversation.
Hayes, who was recently named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, is a junior forward who averaged 15.7 points and 5.8 rebounds last season. Hayes foreshadowed his message, which included his Venmo account, earlier this week via his own social media account.
Hayes's sign has been met with positive and negative responses alike. When confronted by the latter group, whose messages were pretty much all summarized as "be thankful for the free education!", Hayes not only presented solid counterarguments, but had plenty of numbers and visual aids to back up his claims.
The Venmo account name "Brokebadger1" is indeed registered on the money sharing website/app. Though Hayes's name does not appear on the account, donations have been made to it.
Hayes and the basketball Badgers will return to action on November 11, when they host Central Arkansas. Hopefully, Hayes will have some extra to money to celebrate.
