NFL history has always been a fascinating subject, as we look back to see how this sport became the popular juggernaut and cultural beacon for both controversy and obsession. Part of that amazing history is learning what some of the weird NFL team names that have graced the newspaper standings through the past century.
Even now, we’re so close to the sport that we haven’t really taken a second look at weird NFL team names like the Bills, Browns, Chargers, Packers, Steelers and Redskins. (OK, so that last one, we actually have taken a second and third look at.)
If we take a step back, we might be perplexed to understand the origins of some of those team names. (I feel like years from now, kids will be asking why the franchise from San Diego will be named after cell phone chargers.)
But this article is not about those team names, it’s all about those weird NFL team names that we’ve all forgotten about – or never knew existed! (Actually, some of the teams below were from other professional football leagues, like the All-American Football League, but that wouldn’t fit in the headline.)
