Without question the National Football League is the most popular league in America, and American football is one of the most popular sports in the world.
But through the past 50 years or so, the NFL has had to fend off several attempts from other upstart leagues trying to take a bigger slice out of their pie. Leagues like the All-American Football League, the American Football League, the USFL, the XFL and even the Arena Football League have drawn fans through the years. But they all failed to stick, and the mighty fist of the NFL came smashing down upon every single one of them (although, the AFL at least got to merge with them!).
Something interesting, though, is how many rules and innovations the NFL ended up stealing from their former competitors, proving that those leagues were onto something at one point.
