Adidas Offers Private Island If Player Can Break Combine’s 40-Yard Dash Record
As if there is not enough on the line for prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine, Adidas has just gone and upped the ante. In a not-so-veiled attempt at nabbing the star of the combine for an endorsement, the sporting goods company has debuted a contest in which one lucky player could win a private island valued at $1 million.
The contest is part of the marketing strategy for the new Adizero cleat that claims to be "the lightest cleat in football." So of course, wearing said cleats is featured prominently in the list of requirements that a player must meet to be eligible to win the island.
- Must wear adidas Shoes during the 40 Yard Dash
- Must break the Official Record (including any record set during the NFL Scouting Combine by someone other than Athlete) for the fastest time of any position during the 40 Yard Dash
- Athlete enters into an Endorsement Agreement with adidas before the start of the 2017/2018 NFL regular season, then adidas agrees to provide to Athlete an island (selected by adidas) that has a maximum value of One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) (the “Island”)
Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. However just in case any of the athletes thought they might get one by on ole Adidas, they wrote in a few caveats as well. The athlete can't beat the record and then break it again in an attempt to earn a second island, and if for some reason Adidas can't come up with a million dollar island to give away, they'll just hand the player the one-million bucks.
To win the prize, a player at the Combine would have to beat Chris Johnson's record time of 4.24 seconds. It's a feat that seems nearly impossible. Then again, the impossible is happening more and more often these days.
