Not All Of The Philadelphia Eagles Are So Thrilled With The Team’s Free Agency Splash
Ever since the NFL got back to business, the Philadelphia Eagles have been busy causing a stir with several aggressive moves. They shocked everyone and landed star corner Nnamdi Asomugha. They signed Vince Young to back up Michael Vick, after trading away the previous backup, Kevin Kolb, to land another quality cornerback in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. They shored up their defensive line with the additions of Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins.
Naturally, this led to a lot of excitement about - and within - the Eagles organization. They're the big winners of free agency. You've got one of the players they signed making this inevitable (if overstated) comparison. You've even got a Ryan brother talking smack about them. But not everyone's so thrilled - starting with the guy the Eagles' moves might impact most.
That guy: Asante Samuel, the star cornerback they already had before acquiring Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie. Understandably, it seems Samuel now wonders exactly how much his team wants him, and he's not afraid to passive-aggressively voice his concern:
"If they're tired of my big-play-making ability maybe they'll ship me off or maybe they'll want to keep me. Who knows?"
WOOOOOOOOOOO FLY EAGLES FLY!!!!!!
Samuel also said that he "want[s] to be where [he's] wanted," and declined to comment when asked if he'd talked with the Eagles about a trade (though Eagles GM Howie Roseman and Samuel's Agent, Alonzo Shavers, both said he hadn't made a trade request). He added, though, that he felt "50-50" about the Eagles' commitment to him.
Samuel did allow that a three-corner system could work, and that he'd be willing to be part of it. But there's no question that all the Eagles' improvements didn't come without the cost of irking one of the guys they already had. The acquisitions were well worth the risk of upsetting Samuel (worst case, they have to trade him...and they'd probably get something decent in return for him, too), but it's safe to say we'll be keeping an eye on Samuel after these comments.
