Brandon Marshall is ‘so sick and tired’ of hearing about Bill Belichick
There are many people play in, cover or even just watch the NFL that are tired of hearing and talking about Bill Belichick, and New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall is one of them.
During an appearance on Showtime's "Inside the NFL" on Tuesday night, the veteran explained that he believes that Belichick gets a lot of the credit for the work of other Patriots coaches.
"I'm so sick and tired of everyone talking about Coach Belichick," Marshall said. "Yes, he is great. The reason why I'm so sick and tired of everyone talking about Coach Belichick is because they think he does everything and he's the only one in the building that's working. (via WEEI)
"They have a defensive coordinator by the name of Matt Patricia in New England, who's awesome. He has the best third-down defense, and it's not because of statistics. It's because of the creativity."
Technically no one's defense is good because of statistics. Statistics just reveal facts about how good the team is. But I get the general gist of what Marshall's trying to say.
Unfortunately this just comes off as sour grapes more than anything. In spite of any scandal, controversy or rumors, Belichick is regarded almost universally not just as one of the best NFL coaches ever but also as one of the greatest coaches across any major American professional sport.
Belichick is the de facto GM of the Patriots and has been for the majority of his tenure with the team, and his ability to surround himself with elite coordinators that he trust and to whom he delegates only reinforces his abilities as a coach and a leader.
The reason that Matt Patricia is so good at his job is because Belichick took a chance on him back in 2004 when he was just a graduate assistant at Syracuse. That's not to say that Patricia isn't a spectacular defensive coach on his own merits, but it's impossible to ignorethe fact that he's become one of the best coordinators in the NFL while under Belichick's tutelage.
And to say that Patricia or offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have had their contributions to the Patriots success overlooked is foolish. They are two of the most lauded, respected and sought-after coordinators in football.
The most curious part of all of this is the fact that for what it's worth, Marshall owns the Patriots. Since 2001, only Reggie Wayne (897) has more receiving yards against New England than Marshall's 882 yards. His six touchdowns are 4th over that time span as well. If anything, Marshall should be proud that he's managed to get the best of Belichick across his career, rather than whine about how the guy gets too much love.
