Chiefs Pick Eric Fisher At No. 1, Meaning Alex Smith May Live Through First Two Games Of Season (With Updates)
April 25 / Rick Chandler / SportsGrid
The Chiefs have chosen Central Michigan OT Eric Fisher, and the NFL Draft is underway. For the first time I can remember, we didn't know who the top pick would be until Roger Goodell announced it. Also, it's the first time in the Super Bowl era that tackles have gone 1-2 in the draft. And the first time since 2000 that a non-quarterback went No. 1.
Update: Jacksonville at No. 2: Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M. The good news: you went No. 2. The bad news: You have to wear these.
Favorite NFL Network quote so far: "He knows how to bend."
Ghost of Al Davis on the clock.
Update: TRADE. Miami now on the clock. Lane Johnson?
Update: What? Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon. Unexpected.
OK, who will the Eagles pick at No. 4? I expect GREATNESS.
Update: Eagles pick Lane Johnson. Figures that Chip Kelly's first NFL Draft pick would be an offensive tackle who played quarterback in high school.
Update: Barry Sanders announces Lions No. 5 pick. It's Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU. One of greatest stories of the draft: Grew up in Ghana, and only played football at BYU because he was cut from basketball and track teams (via NFL Network).
Update: Browns pick Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU, at No. 6. Kevin Costner furious.
Update: With No. 7, Cardinals take Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina. The NFL Network montage of Cooper childhood photos is like watching Bruce Banner transform into the hulk.
Update: At No. 8, Rams choose Tavon Austin, WR, WVU.
NY Jets get next pick. Prepare for optimism, cheer and good wishes from all Jets fans in attendance.
Update: Jets, No. 9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama. Fans seem OK with it. (The Teddy Bear, not so much). Deion Sanders just asked him if he could replace Darrelle Revis, and Milliner said "Yes, very much so." Then Deion pointed out Milliner's enormous, gold watch. Wow.
Update: Tennessee Titans pick Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama. That's five offensive linemen in top 10.
That's the top 10, so I'm leaving the war room and we'll try to make sense of the first round in the morning.
