Dan Snyder's Lawyers Are Now Taking Native Americans To Court For Being Offended
Remember when the Washington football team lost their trademark for their team name? Remember how five Native Americans objected to the team's usage of the term "Redskin" and petitioned the U.S. Patent Office to revoke said trademark on the grounds it was "disparaging"? Remember how IT ACTUALLY IS DISPARAGING??? Welp, Synder & Co. didn't like that ruling very much, and now they're trying to get the trademark back.
...by suing the five Native Americans who asked the Patent Office to consider their own stance on the team's name.
That's right, they're suing the people who take issue with the name, and not, ya know, the people who handed down the ruling. That's like suing the lady you ran over because she dented your bumper.
[TPM] Lawyers for the five Native Americans argue that the Redskins' lawsuit against them should be dismissed because the team's real dispute is with the patent office.
But the Redskins argue the lawsuit is an appropriate, and even preferred, method of appealing the board's decision. The team says the group of Native Americans is a proper target because it filed the petition that initiated the board's action and have an interest in the outcome.
The team will be able to use the name freely, but can lose their exclusive rights once the legal process eventually ends. As for the guys being sued, they're asking a Virginia judge to throw the suit out because "this is America" and "what the fuck" (we're paraphrasing). In the interim, Bonercats is still available.
