Donald Trump Apparently Bought Signed Tim Tebow Helmet With Charity Funds
Shame, Donald Trump. How dare you suck Tim Tebow into your sordid world. Tebow is pure and righteous and good! He will not dance with the orange devil.
According to the Washington Post, Trump spent thousands of dollars on sports memorabilia at a 2012 Susan G. Komen breast cancer fundraiser, but it turns out that none of it was his own money. Trump bought a jersey -- and get this -- a Tebow autographed helmet -- using funds from his own Donald J. Trump Foundation charity.
It was another shrewd investment by Trump -- pretty much immediately following the purchase, Tebow's career tanked. He was released by the Broncos, worked out for the Jets and Eagles, and hasn't played a regular-season NFL down since.
But worse than that, buying NFL memorabilia with charity funds makes the IRS sad and grumpy. Actually, it's illegal. Washington Post:
The items in question were a jersey and a helmet, the latter signed by the then-popular NFL quarterback Tim Tebow. And while Trump himself raised the proverbial auction paddle and placed the $12,000 winning bid, research by The Washington Post indicates it was the Donald J. Trump Foundation — not The Donald himself — that foot the bill.
Whether or not this was an explicit breach of tax law hangs on what the presumptive GOP nominee did with the football gear after that January night in Palm Beach, California.
If Trump kept the items for himself, it is indeed a violation — after all, those dollars surely weren’t donated to help a billionaire freshen up his jersey collection.
